Winning the 2016 Derby Arena women’s track league – words by Tiffany Fletcher:
It all started in December when I got a track bike for my birthday, I had watched a few of the ladies racing and thought it looked like fun so me and my mum both entered the 2016 league, my first race was terrible and I rode above the blue line the whole time as I didn’t want to be at the back.
My next race was better and I started to feel comfortable in the group. I then started earning points and that boosted my confidence. A few races in and I had moved up the league table. It came to summer and the league paused for 3 months, I got some more training in on the road and developed my endurance.
Once the league started again I knew the training was paying off and I was winning races and earning points! It got to the last two weeks and I had a really good penultimate week, winning 4 out of the 5 races which meant I was leading by 7 points going into the final week. I came prepared knowing it would be a hard night, I knew what I had to do to win the league and I did exactly that.
It came down to the final race and I managed to hold my competitors off meaning I won by one point! It was an intense night but that made the win so much better! That was it, I was the women’s track league winner!!
